4TH REPORT SEM 2 2009/2010

Khamis, 24 Disember 2009
The main function of Public Relation Secretariat is to give a good impression to the community (students, administrations and lecturers) and also the outsiders towards SRC and IIUM. There are several actions that have been taken to achieve this objective.

1. DOWN TO EARTH

Date : 23rd July, 27th July, 4th August, 12 August, 20 August,
24th August, 2nd September, 9th September 2009
Target Group : IIUM Community
Venue : Mahallah Faruq, Ali, Usman, Siddiq, Bilal, Nusaibah,
Maryam, Asiah, Safiyyah, Ameenah, Hafsa

Public Relation (PR) Secretariat managed to handle a program ‘Down To Earth’ with the cooperation from Welfare Secretariat and other SRC exco members. The modus operandi is to distribute SRC poster in those mahallat for the purpose of introducing the new elected SRC exco members’ i.e., SRC 2008/2009. In addition, the purpose of this activity is to facilitate students to communicate directly with the SRC exco members. By that, it creates an easier way for students to lodge any complaints or reports to SRC. We cannot go to all mahallat due to consideration of the participants and time constraint.

By conducting this activity, we had received many complaints, comments, together with some suggestions by IIUM community. The students become more open minded and liked to share their problems with SRC. Special thanks dedicated to IIUM community who had given excellent and positive responses to us. Not to forget, MRC who are willing to help us with the venue and hospitality. With regard to the several complaints that we received, those has been delivered to the relevant authorities in IIUM to reconcile the disputes.

2. SRC ONE STOP CENTER

Date : 21st July, 29th July, 6th August, 14th August, 19th August,
26th August, 1st September, 9th September 2009
Target Group : IIUM Students
Venue : All Kulliyyat

‘SRC One-Stop Centre’ begun at the second half of the tenure of SRC 2008/2009 after discovering some difficulties faced by the IIUM community in reaching us. We managed to visit and meet students in their own kulliyyah such as Kulliyyah of IRKHS and Institute of Education, Kulliyyah of Engineering, Kulliyyah of Economics, etc. In this tour, we managed to distribute the SRC bulletins, magazines and also face- mask to the students during the HIN1 outbreak. However due to the lack of promotion, many students still do not realize and participate in our tour. But we had tried our best in promoting this activity because the main purpose of it is to promote SRC programs and to show our concern towards students.

3. VISIT

Visitors :

- Universiti Teknologi Mara Pulau Pinang
- Universiti Tun Hussein Onn
- Universiti Utara Malaysia
- Universiti Malaysia Sabah
- Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia
- International Islamic College
- Politeknik Johor Bahru
- Politeknik Mersing
- SMKA Falahiah

SRC IIUM also receives a lot of visits from outsiders including lecturers and students’ body. The visit is basically conducted by the Public Relation secretariat. The visits were fulfilled by some discussion between SRC exco members and the visitors. In every visit, we managed to have a special slot with them to discuss about the exclusive attributes of IIUM and the uniqueness of this university. Besides, the discussion also touches on the role and function of SRC towards the IIUM communities. Alhamdulillah, as God wills, each visit were run smoothly and we received a positive responses from them.

4. INVITATIONAL PROGRAM

Programmes :
- Konvensyen Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar IPTA, KPT
- National Talk Program, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia,
- Majlis Penyampaian Anugerah Merdeka, Merdeka Award,
- Festival Mahasiswi Universiti Malaya, Universiti Malaya,
- Malaysia Outstanding Youth Conference, UUM
- Mesyuarat Khas Aktiviti Pembangunan Mahasiswa Islam
IPTA, Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi
- Training of Trainers Hak Asasi Manusia
- Shariah Awareness Programme, Malaysian Financial
Planning Council
- Forum Belia Untuk Masa Depan

SRC had received a lot of invitational program from other universities and also organization. Some of the program gave a lot of benefit to us as well as the students, but there are also some invitations that are not relevant to us but it can give positive exposure to the students. The main problem that we have is some of the programs were held during the class hour. Hence, sometimes we failed to fulfill their invitation since study being our first priority. We can say that, the rationale behind those invitations is to give a good exposure and beneficial information for students as they will become a good leader of the Ummah in the future.

5. EXCHANGE STUDENTS PROGRAM

Meetings and a proposal had been submitted to Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Kulliyyah of Engineering, Dr. Zuraida Ahmad. She already had meetings with Sis. Aishah and Bro. Shamsul, International Centre Exchange Office, ICEO. Their responses are that, our kulliyyah can support the expenditure of the students but on the other hand, it is better to increase the opportunity to other students for the exchange students program. From the meeting, we had been informed that Kulliyyah of Engineering had managed to make a deal with LEHIGH University, PA, US, ISAT, France (Automotive), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and TIT, Japan. Previously our kulliyyah just managed to send our students to UNiSA, Australia.

6. ADMIN – STUDENTS DIALOGUE ON NEW ACCOMMODATION POLICY

On 14th December 2009, located at Experimental Hall, IIUM a dialogue between students and administration was held. The dialogue was organized by Secretariat of Welfare, SRC in collaboration with Secretariat of Sports and Culture, SRC. The officers invited to the dialogue were Prof. Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod, Deputy Rector Student Affairs, Tuan Haji Kamarudin Haji Samat, Director Student Affairs Division (STAD) and Madam Sakinah Jusoh, Head Mahallah, Accommodation and Coordination Department. About 200 students attended the dialogue. The main issue clarified by the speakers was regarding the new accommodation policy. The speakers’ mentioned that, mahallat still can accommodate the students inside campus for the time being. However, the policy maybe will be affective in July 2011. Belajar Berenang

Rabu, 30 September 2009

Nak belajar berenang??? Senang jer.....

"Nak belajar berenang!!!" Adik aku cakap kat abangnya. Senang jer ni. Buku kan banyak. kalau tak paham sangat pun, beli jer Learn Swimming for Dummies (ada la kot buku ni).

"Ok, tak dak hal nya. Nak belajar pa?",
"Apa yang ada?",
"Ish, macam-macam.

Maka, pembelajaran pun bermula.

Nanti kejang terjun terus. Pi mandi air hujan dulu". Kalut pulak adik aku ni.

Apa lagi, setelah semua nya dah siap sedia, kolam pun terbentang, dush!!!!!

Adik aku lemas!!!!!

Cepat-cepat selamatkan dia.

al-ilm illa 'amalin kai syajarah illa samarin.

Moga Ilmu kami sentiasa berlandaskan Iman, Amin.

ENGINEERING CONSTITUENCY

1. MEETING WITH THE NEW DEPUTY RECTOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PROF. DR. NIK AHMAD KAMAL NIK MAHMOD

On 15th July 2009, SRC had the first meeting with the newly appointed Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod. Some issues were raised by the Excos especially highlighting the problems faced in IIUM Gombak and Kuantan. This meeting was attended by Exco members of SRC from Gombak and Kuantan campus through a video conference. Below were the issues which had been discussed during the meeting.

i) REQUEST FOR ROOF TOP WALKAWAY FROM MAHALLAH TO KULLIYYAH

It is understood that around 80% of the students do have vehicles for our convenience especially for going to classes. However, we also realize that the balance of 20% of the students who do not have any vehicles or in other words who walk to classes also deserve a high quality of facilities. Therefore, we propose for a roof top walkway to be constructed from mahallah to kulliyyah as we believe that this will be a great convenience not just to the students but also all kinds of users including visitors, staffs and the workers.

ii) ROAD IN FRONT OF MAHALLAH ALI

Another issue that had been discussed was a request to repair the road in front of Mahallah Ali. Through our observation, the road in front of this particular mahallah is not convenient and suitable for road users. Many students had complained that the road can cause accidents besides causing damage to the car where consequently some money has to be allocated to repair the damage whereas it can be spent for something more worthy. We really hope that this request will create a comfortable and contented feeling amongst the students and the other road users.

iii) SRC SEAT FOR INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION CONSTITUENCY AND A REVIEW FOR GENERAL SEATS IN CAMPUS GENERAL ELECTION

Currently, there are only two seats for SRC for Kulliyyah of IRKHS and Institute of Education. We view that Institute of Education deserves their own seats in SRC for the sake of their welfare and as the medium and channel in conveying their voice. The number of students available in Institute of Education is more than enough for them to have their own representative in SRC. Besides, the relevancy of General Seats (Kerusi Umum) to be reviewed was also raised in the meeting as this can offer the students a bigger right and opportunity in choosing their leaders besides of preparing a medium for them to know the students from other Kulliyyah. This we believe in line with the mission of integrating the community of IIUM.

iv) ROOM RESHUFFLING

We have raised the matter during the meeting highlighting the demand of the students to be excused from reshuffling rooms. However, the officer in charge of this matter, Mdm Sakinah Jusoh, Head of Mahallah Administration and Coordination Department commented that they can hardly entertain the demand as reshuffling room is made as a university policy as it is seen that there is a great necessity for it to be done especially in ensuring the cleanliness of the rooms in mahallah.

v) WIRELESS

We had discussed the issue to upgrade availability of wireless service in students’ room for their convenience and comfort. This will definitely ease the students’ burden as they don’t have to go outside to surf internet as they can easily access internet from their room. It is understood that the use of wireless is very important among the students including the lecturers and other staff in the campus. We also realized there are mahallah which did not have access of wireless yet. Therefore, this matter was highlighted in the meeting, and the response was that the coverage in mahallah is in progress and hopefully every mahallah will receive a good wireless coverage soon.

vi) REVISION PERIOD

The issue regarding this semester revision period had been discussed with Prof Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod. It has been highlighted by an Exco from Kuantan that the revision period is very short and not enough. However, the response was that the short duration of revision period is due to a longer period of Aidil Fitri break this semester. In addition, the deputy dean advised all students to make an early preparation for this coming final.

vii) EMERGENCY CASH FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS PROGRAMME

Prof Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal commented that he will propose this issue to the higher authority for the students to be sponsored for exchange student programme especially providing them with emergency cash to support for the preparation expenditure.

2. TUNNEL FROM KULLIYYAH OF ENGINEERING TO MAHALLAH HAFSA

We received a report from one of the Main boards of ENGINIUS highlighting the problem with regards to the tunnel. We then had proposed for the tunnel to be quickly repaired due to the poor condition of the tunnel especially flood problem when there is heavy raining. This had caused problems and difficulties to the students who use the tunnel to go to the kulliyyah.

An action had been taken where we already consulted with the IIUM Properties on this matter on 24th June 2009. Some pictures of the tunnel also were also attached together with the complaint letter. Alhamdulillah, the response that we received was that the report will be passed to the contractor for further action. Hopefully, a quick and speedy action will be taken to resolve this matter.

60 tingkat

Selasa, 11 Ogos 2009

Tapi malangnya, nak jadi cerita kan, malam tu lif rosak la pulak.
Bayangkan nak kena naik ke tingkat 60, pergh!!!
Nak buat macam mana kan, nak tunggu pun, technician esok baru kerja.

Jadi kami pun buat plan,

Fuh, ok. Sampai dah tingkat 41, 20 tingkat lagi tuuu!!!

Last-last, kami pun sampai di depan pintu apartment kami.
Aku pun apa lagi, cepat-cepat la suh adik aku buka pintu. Dah penat dah ni, 60 tingkat. Rekod tu.

Pekerjaan, mendirikan rumah tangga, kewangan, anak-anak.

Bila dah masuk 40 tahun, banyak cerita sedih yang kita dengar. Kawan kena penyakit, anak-anak tak datang jenguk sampai lah umur 60 tahun; hampir dengan kehidupan yang abadi.

Akhirnya, kita leka, hidup hanya lah sementara, kita tinggal kan harta-benda kita, anak-anak kita, sahabat handai, segala-galanya.

Perkampungan Budaya Kuala Pilah

3RD NATIONAL CONVENTION OF STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL.

On 15th – 20th June 2009, 3rd National Students’ Representative Council Convention, (Konvensyen Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar IPTA Kali Ke-3) was held at Tun Hussein Onn University (UTHM). Twenty institutions of government tertiary education and four institutions of private tertiary education took part in the convention. Among the speakers invited were Yang Berhormat Dato’ Mohd Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Higher Education and Yang Berhormat Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education. During the dialogue about two and half hours with Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, issues rose by the other SRCs as well as from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) were; IIUM SRC refuse to be labeled as what people called as opposition but rather critical towards certain issue. They also request for section 15 of Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 to be abrogated but yet, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah is in favour for it to be amended. In the resolution of the convention, IIUM SRC proposed that Islamic teaching should be introduced to all universities and wanted the practical allowance to be provided as before.

DIALOGUE REGARDING HELMET ISSUE.

On 27th June 2009, located at Experimental Hall, IIUM a dialogue between students and administration was held. The dialogue was organized by Secretariat of Public Relation, SRC in collaboration with Secretariat of Welfare, SRC. The officers invited to the dialogue were Dr. Akmal Khuzairy Abdul Rahman, Director of Student Development Division, Mr. Abdul Wahab Hj. Zawawi, IIUM Security Officer, and Mr. Muhamad Azrul Hazerin, Assistant Director of Legal Unit. About 100 students attended the dialogue. The main issue clarified by the speakers was regarding the enforcement of wearing helmet to all motorcyclists inside IIUM which scheduled to commence on 1st July 2009. However, the administration promised to enforce rule gradually. On the other hands, some students had requested to postpone the enforcement at least one month after the commencement of semester 1, 2009/2010 session. Some security issues were also discussed during the dialogue such as theft cases in Mahallah, lack of parking spaces at the Kulliyyahs, summons imposed on the students and other welfare issues.

INTELLECTUAL FIESTA 2009.

During Intellectual Fiesta, IIUM SRC had organized five sub events. One of them is the dialogue of Economic World Crisis held on 4th June 09 at the Main Auditorium of IIUM. Speakers invited were YB Khairy Jamaluddin, Rembau MP, YB Nik Nazmi, State Assemblyman of Seri Setia and also Miss Nani from Harvard Law School. Moderator for this event was Prof. Aslam from the Economics Department, KENMS. This event was attended by more than 500 people who are IIUM students, people around Lembah Klang and also students from other universities. SRC had also organized a trip to Arkib Negara on 5th June 09. 60 students had taken part in this trip. During this trip they had discussed about the thoughts of Tun Hussein Onn, 3rd Prime Minister of Malaysia. On 8th June 09, a theater entitled “Whose Afraid of Farabi?” was held at the Main Auditorium. Around 500 students attended the play. For the 4th and 5th sub event, SRC will organize an outreach program in several schools around Lembah Klang Valley and Islamic Scholars Remembrance programme through information printed on bunting and to be has all over the campus.

TRADITIONAL GAMES CARNIVAL 2009.

On 6th June 09, Secretariat of Sports and Culture, SRC had organized Traditional GameCarnival 2009 that was open to all Cultural Based Societies (CBSs) and Kulliyyah Based Societies (KBSs). The carnival was held in Saidina Hamzah Male Sport Complex and attracted 200 students to join and took part in the games. The games played by the participants on that day were “permainan guli (marbles), galah panjang, konda-kondi, congkak and teng-teng”. The objectives of organizing such event are to educate local students to appreciate the Malaysian heritage andalso to introduce local culture to the International students. Mdm Norliza Che Hassan, Assistant Director of Cultural and Art Unit said that the programme was good and she said that SRC should try to organize it as an annual event. She mentioned that SRC should also include international traditional games from other countries to make this carnival more interesting and wonderful for the next time.

OPERATION HOUR OF LIBRARY

SRC had received several requests and suggestions from students regarding IIUM Library operation hours. They suggest the library to be opened 24 hours during examination period, especially the reading area. SRC had forwarded the matter to IIUM Library and meet the Assistant Director of Library, Mdm Nuraqmar Az Amirudin. She said the issue has already been raised during library management meeting on June. The demand from students is quite difficult to be fulfilled since the suggestion will involve the extension of IIUM Library staffs shift. Furthermore, it will increase the number of theft cases in library and other security issues. However, the decision is not finite and such suggestion to the IIUM Library can be forwarded to Chief of Librarian through letter. IIUM Library also wants to promote inter-library book loan. Students who are interested to borrow books from any libraries in Malaysia can do so by fulfilling the Inter-Library Loan (ILL) form provided.

If you have any ideas on how to improve SRC 08/09, kindly forward your comments to http://src-iium.blogspot.com . You are also invited to visit our office at level 4, above Muamalat Bank.
